Is there any special diet / food that a mother who just delivered a baby needs to have?

Isn't that something that the mom's doctor should be involved in?

I think it would depend on the delivery, health of the mother and baby, if the mother was diabetic during pregnancy, etc. Not everyone has the same pregnancy and delivery.

I was just interested in generally what moms eat after delivery. I wasn't targeting at any specific illness/ condition.

In Asia, there is this thing called "confinement food" - like sesame chicken, ginger chicken etc, but I cannot seem to get any info (on the web) on what Western moms eat after delivery. And since I am here in the US, I may not have access to the Asian "confinement food", or know how to prepare them, hence my question.

Yes, I will definitely ask the doctor as well :)

I don't think there is anything similar in the US to the Asian "confinement food" for post-delivery mothers. But like Mama Mangia said, if you are on a special diet during pregnancy, then you need to talk with your doctor about your post-delivery diet.

Speaking from experience though... If you are breast-feeding, I recommend staying away from very spicy foods and foods with alot of tomatoes in them. The flavors get into your milk & get passed on to the baby and may, in my daughter's case for example, cause your baby to have an upset stomach. Dairy foods can also cause that.

That's an interesting point. Thanks phoenystarr!
