Ramen Noodles

I have been in a situation MANY times in which ramen noodles were the only meal I could afford. Despite having to eat them frequently, I still like them. I have a few ways I like to fix them.

Sometimes I like to crack a raw egg into the boiling noodles and let it cook in there. Drain excess water and enjoy egg-drop ramen noodles.

Usually, I boil the noodles, drain all the water, then add the seasoning packet and toss in about a Tbsp of butter. Stir it all up....yum yum...give me some!

Anyone else like Ramen? If so, do you have any variations?

Yes, it's easy to soup up the ramen noodles.

First thought would be the broth. The packet in the noodles is loaded with MSG, which bothers some, but not most.

I prefer to use canned chicken, beef, or vegetable broth instead. Low sodium style if I can find it.

Next, the first vegetable that comes to mind is chopped scallion. Nice and green, adds color and taste.

Nice diced carrots, and/or bean sprouts. Sprouts are an acquired taste, and are added at serving time so they are still crunchy. Carrots should go in when you starting to cook, so they can soften.

Chopped celery comes to mind too.

As for protein. Chopped tofu, chopped chicken, or beef. The chicken or beef could be either luncheon meats, or raw, and if raw should be cooked in another pot of boiling water until done, and then chopped and added to the ramen noodles.

You don't need much of any of these to make a good meal so the cost is low.

Hope this helps.

My best thought is that for quick meals, a slice of lunch meat will go a long way with the ramen. I do that a lot.

Sometimes I think my son is going to turn into a Ramen Noddle, he's almost two and somedays he has it for lunch and dinner.

He like just the noodles w/out the seasoning packet and then we add parmesan cheese, butter and a little garlic and the kid goes to town.

He calls them curly oodles

yeah, I have a 5 year old and she loves the noodles as well. Sometimes she like the seasoning and sometimes not. Hard to tell with her.

I like to have the Ramen noodles as a quick lunch. I usually do not use the favor packet that comes with it, instead I use a can of broth chicken or beef whichever I have on hand. I love mushrooms and usually will add a small can of mushrooms to the broth and noodles. Make a great quick lunch....yum.

I could probably eat ramen noodles for a week and not get tired of them. I even named my cat Noodle (although, I must admit, NOT after ramen noodles).

That's a pretty cute name. Not sure I could eat them a week and not get tired of them. I do like them from time to time.

I like ramen noodles too. cheap and easy to fix. I don't eat them like soup though. I like to drain them and then put the seasoning on them. I think I will have them for lunch today.

On Sunday mornings I cook the ramen noodles up in plain water for 2 minutes, put the ramen in a lightly oiled ramekin, top with a beaten egg or two, added some fresh chopped green onions, and chopped ham, and finally top with some Cheddar cheese. Bake about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

It's a nice change of pace from the usual breakfast meals.

Baked ramen for breakfast? WOW....that is about as different as it gets right there. :)

You know, I don't know that I have ever tasted Ramen noodles. How I got through college without that, I'll never know.

hehe. I think you are one of a few that have never had Ramen. That is the best thing when you are so broke and have about $1.00 to you name. You can get a weeks worth. =)

Aren't Ramen nooldes those flat noodles? I'm pretty sure they're flat, and kind of big, but I might be thinking of something else.

I haven't really thought to do much with ramen noodles, besides crack an egg into it. Like another poster, I drain all but a tiny amount of water out of the noodles and add the seasoning and eat it that way --my husband likes it with a lot of broth so we usually cook it seperately and eat it with saltine crackers and a glass of milk. Mushrooms, do sound like they would be pretty good with it.

Yes, ramen noodles have been a lifesaver for me on a number of occassions. My kids love ramen noodles to. They are so inexpensive. I always try to pick some up when we go grocery shopping. My kids call them OODLES N NOODLES. lol

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that finds all different ways to "spice up" Ramen Noodles. My husband hates it when I put eggs in them though. I love it.

JKander - I think you might be thinking of linguine noodles. They are flat and wider. The Ramen noodles are round and kind of wavy. They are usually found in a 6 X 4 X 2 inch package and come with a little seasoning package inside. You usually can get 5 or 6 pkgs for a buck, very inexpensive.

Ramen noodles are definately not flat. :) They're very good though. LOL

I bought some of these today at food lion. I bought chicken, shrimp, and oriental. This is my first time getting the shrimp flavor. My 6 year old wanted to try them.

Hey Muffinman - I like your breakfast recipe for using Ramen noodles and eggs together. I think I will try your recipe this weekend. Do you use any type of seasoning in the recipe?
