As far as some of these rigid views and rules- I tend to prefer freedom of choice in all matters. I don't like being told what to do- then again, I also cannot conceive of feeling I have the freedom of making someone else's mind up for them- thus eliminating their choice- either. Too many folks are all too happy to push their religion, push their politics, push their entire belief systems on others- and disregard others' high regard for their own freedom to make their own choices.
UpState NY has a whole different mentallity than NY City. It's much like the Mountains of Georgia, lol. We had chickens, cows, hogs horses, goats, turkies and scores of dogs and cats. No one one ever complained.
I think that when they put in developements, certain busy bodies need to take control of everything around them and everyone else needs to conform to their wishes. They become their own mini government.
With all the over wieght people in this country, some day people like this will probably try to take control over what is served as a meal at home if they could.
Mom and dad will probably have to provide a nutritional fact sheet for little Junior to get approved before he can eat the fried chicken planned for Sundays dinner, lol.

NY City is much of the same, the days for live and let live is long gone, the busy bodies of today are mindless of what is really going on, for instance I have a friend who pays for a garage, because she is a bit old and do not park her car in the garage, some busy body complained to the board and they asked her to clean her garage and return the keys, because it was not worth it, she refused to fight, I guess at a certain age it is just not worth it. I felt so terrible for her, and I was amazed at what was going on in the restricted area I am living in. If she had never told me I would not know, even with restrictions there is additional harassment... unbelievable!
We have garages and an extremely large parking lots for those of us who do not have a garage, and prefer not to park in the street. I recently bought a motorcycle and was about to go for a ride, I removed my bike from the dark garage, and parked my motorcycle in a space in the parking lot, so that I can see the true color in the sun, went inside to change, came back to find security barring me from removing my motorcycle, only to find out that someone complained that I was occupying a space where a car can be parked, do you believe these people, get a life, do something productive with your free time, now mind you they had to actually park their car, write down all the particulars pertaining to my bike license number and so forth, go into their home I will guess "fuming" how dare a person park a motorcycle there in their feeble mind, find the number for security, call and complain. Anyway, I removed my bike because I was going out, but legally parked as I was, I was not moving. I pay maintenance, security and all the added expenses that is requested of me just like everybody else. Luckily for this busy body I do have a garage for my motorcycle.

Yep- what a whacko story, scuba! It just ain't the free country it used to be! I never understood folks who wanted the added burden of thinking things that were not their business- were. I just don't get it at all!

It is so much easier on the brain to live life by your daily experiences and smile basically for everything it lightens up the mind and keeps you in a good mood, for instance I was feeling a bit down a couple days ago got up in a not so good mood, laid in my bed and basically went on a diving trip in my mind I could see myself with my gear on , jumping into the water, looking down at the corals, then going down below to 130 feet, that was great! put me in a nice mood, then I ventured outside to face the world.
