I have heard of "Whole Foods" of course- but I've never lived near one.

Organic? No insult intended at all, really- but I know enuf about the food industry to know the reality of "organic". Home-grown? That's a completely diff story- but store-bought organic? Hmmm... Tricky stuuf- hard to be absolutely sure...

That's why I have my own garden. Even when I lived in a condo, I planted veggies in big flower pots:) Seeing corn stalks growing on my porch was a conversation piece to say the least, and the ones who laughed had corn growing on their porches the next year:p I also had tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, onions, herbs, squash (vines grew along the railing). I did have to go to a local farmers market for potatoes and a few veggies and fruit I couldn't grow on my porch.
I cherish my garden and love nothing better than to get out and tend to it:)

Of course I grow as much as I can too but I live in the city. I don't have enough land to groweverything we eat. Maybe the organic market is ambiguous but at least there is a chance your are getting food with fewer pesticides. If you don't buy organic then there is no chance that you are getting fewer pesticides. I also like the fact that much of the produce from Whole Foods is local. I go to the farmer's market when I can but it's only open on Saturday's until noon. If I miss that window then Whole Foods is my only option for local produce.

I get smoked provolone, swiss, gouda and cheddar at a deli here in town for $5.50 a pound. At Krogers 1/3 of a pound of smoked provolone was $8.03![/QUOTE]

Are you sure that wasn't an error by the deli clerk????

I know we pay an average $6.99 - $8.49/lb. here for various cheeses.

That Kroger's has always been really high. The only time you get even close to a good deal is if you use a kroger card. Even with the card it is hard to find a good deal there. They had the little containers of
marscopone for $3.50. A really small wedge of parmesean was $8.
I went to get fish and they had the 8oz packs of Kraft shredded cheese for $1.99 each.
I always stock up shredded cheddar and mozerella for mac and cheese and baked pasta.
