I got a this mandoline a month or so ago I have used it a couple of times. I like the mandoline for making gratin. That thing would be very very easy to cut yourself with. My husbands Mom mentioned borrowing it. I was like I dont think you wanna do that. She has arthritis in her hands bad and her husband is really kinda scattered and accident prone. I could see blood being spilled there. I get alot of my stuff at JCPenney online. They are always sending me emails for the home cook..sneaky rats always lure me in with clearance sales lol.

Janie, with the possible exception of a dull knife, there is nothing in the kitchen as dangerous as a mandoline---particularly when people see celebrity chefs using them without the saftey guards.

I'm with you. I would not share mine with anybody who I cared about. Not unless I was prepared to have fingertips mixed in with the cole slaw.

That said, there are, of course, some tasks that nothing performs like a mandoline; essentially anything that requires (or at least benefits from) equal sized slices. I love mine for those tasks. But I won't let Friend Wife touch it, either.

Nothing bothers a blindman more than the sound of his wife sharpening her knives. Alteast thats what my husband says.
Lets hope my mother in law doesnt ask to borrow the mandoline when she has been getting on my nerves lol. His Mom and her hubby are always bickering in the kitchen or where ever they are. Less than five minutes one of them would be hurt on it. She was thinking it would be good for doing veggies she wants to freeze like zucchini. I told her she would be better off to get herself a food processor. They are very VERY "frugal" although they can more than afford anything they want.

I agree..that thing is the most dangerous little kitchen tool ever. I debated alot before even getting one but I got a coupon for like 30% off from Penney's and free shipping. At the time that was the only thing they had in housewares that interested me.

There are too many other gadgets out there that will cut her veggies! Buy her one for Christmas!

I love kitchen gadgets, but finally got to where I put my foot down and made myself stop! There are some memorable ones that I would never be able to live with-out! And then those like Mama mentioned that are the epitome of stupidity; and I would feel even stupider for being roped in! Amazingly enough there was this gadget that I wish I had never gotten rid of years ago called a ronco vegomatic! Made the best french fry slices ever and clean-up was a cinch. My neice and nephew the world's biggest french fry lovers in the world talked me out of it (half the time they had it anyway!) And my second favorite was the Oster Kitchen Center! Those two items I miss all the time!
