Rain

I dont know if you have gotten much on your end KYH but it seems to be every other day here. It rained so heavy night before last we have 6 inches standing in one end of the garden. Lots of people havent been able to get the garden out at all around here because it has been so wet.
I LOVE the fact its not as hot as it was last summer but with so much rain and the cool nights things just arent growing well in our garden. Potatoes and cabbage seem to be doing fair and the strawberries are ok but everything else seems almost stunted. I go to the garden about twice a week and can hardly see any growth at all. Even my herbs are coming in sparse. The bugs seem to be the only thing thriving.
Last year we baked and everything withered and this year it just seems to be getting a slow start or something. I remember this time last year we were already having days at 98+ degrees.
Is anyone else having the same problem?

WE HAVE BEEN GETTING PROPER PORTIONS OF RAIN VS. DRY HERE AND I AM SO THANKFUL AS THE DROUGHT LAST YEAR WAS JUST HORRIBLE! LAST NIGHT THOUGH IT CAME A DELUGE, I MEAN TO TELL YOU, I THOUGHT FOR SURE OUR CREEK OUT BACK WOULD OVER FLOW! AND NOW IT TURNED UNSEASONABLY COOL. THE WEATHER HAS BEEN QUITE COOL THIS YEAR SO FAR, AS YOU MENTIONED IT DOES INDEED SLOW DOWN GROWTH IN THE GARDEN.

IT SEEMS THE BUGS ARE ALWAYS FAIRING WELL IN ANY GARDEN. I SHOOT MINE AWAY WITH A MIST OF WATERED DOWN DISH DETERGENT AND CAYENNE PAPPER IN A SPRAY BOTTLE EVERY DAY! (AS I DO NOT WANT ANY TOXIC CHEMICALS TO KILL MY FRIENDLY EARTHWORMS) I HAVE SEEN THE WORST DAMAGE DONE TO MY EGGPLANT PLANTS:mad: BUT THEY ARE HANGING IN THERE AND CONTINUE TO PUT ON NEW LEAVES!

I SURE HOPE THINGS WILL EVEN OUT FOR YOU WEATHER WISE REAL SOON JANIE! THE ONLY THING WE CAN HAVE CONTROL OVER IS OUR PATIENCE LEVEL AND THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO GET THRU THIS RAINY SEASON, IT WILL BE WHAT IT WILL BE WEATHER WISE I'M AFRAID! KAY-SERA-SERA AS THE OLD SONG GOES.

Jons Dad is not shy with the chemicals. But as soon as he dusts his garden it rains lol.
I so want to make Mama's salsa and marinara this year. I hope we get atleast get enough tomatoes for that.

:D I am going to be overwhelmed with tomatoes - worst comes to wosrt I'll send ya' some of mine! :D

I don't know if you read it in my other post but my pepper plants almost all turned out to be tomato plants.

I have only 4 pepper plants:( But lots and lots of rows of tomatoes:eek:

By the way I have already got squash on the vine! And I wish you could see Maddy's sunflower plants, they are gigantic!!!!

I am loving it!!!

I envy you.
Hmm..postage on tomatoes.
Yeah I had read where you had more tomatoes than you intended. Jons Dad showed me some tomato plants at the green house that would be easy to mistake for pepper plants.

Yeah postage would be a bummer! One year I had pears and figs coming out of my ears so I pkg.'d them up nice and neat and mailed them to all the ( in-laws er..ungratefuls) I could think of, never even received a thank you, guess they thought it to be wierd. I was just trying to share the bounty! Did that ever cost a small fortune to overnight those boxes!
This evening I had to replant 2 rows in my garden, while I was gone on vacation something ate my 2 rows of spinach that I just got up. So this time I just planted 2 more rows of.......sugar snap peas, yummy!!! But I love my spinach, and so I will plant more in the fall. I have always admired farmers and all the odds that are against them, just imagine all that they go through!
I wish I had a digital camera I would post you some pictures of my garden, you'd get a kick out of it. I am a fastidious housekeeper and when you look at my garden you will recognize that, it's so darn pretty and neat I almost think I am looking at a picture out of a magazine when I look at it! It's funny! I used old carpet and stuff to cover the ground and so I do not even have to weed, if a piece of grass comes up I trim it with the scissors, and I have absolutely no weeds. This has by far been my best ever experience with a garden in my entire life, it's so great!!! I do not mind sweating or getting mosquito bites or even a sore back from bending over. I wonder if I will feel this way for every year coming up? Maybe it is because I got to do it all my way, and I didn't have someone knocking my ideas (quite the opposite) and I was given free reign. That is such a remarkable and wonderful feeling! Now my fiance just beams and brags on what a green thumb I have got, he's taking pictures with his cell phone and sending them to his family members in New York, it's so funny!
Well Jg I will not bore you with any more "garden talk"! Well not for this post anyway LOL!

Cathy,

The way to ship fresh produce and fruit, and keep it cost effective, is with a Fedex or UPS flat-rate box.

Of course, it takes a bunch of stuff to fill one up. So only send it to folks who appreciate your effort.

Just a hint on why other than the rain that many of the those plants are not doing anything..

The soil is probably a lower temperature than optimal for all these plants due to the rain. Also, all that rain spurs them into root production so a lot is probably going on underground.

Once you get a few nice hot days, you will see those plants start growing.

Cathy I would happily pay for a box of figs when you have them.
I cannot get them anywhere around here.

That is so right. I read several years back, that it has to be 50+F overnight for the soil to warm up. That just happened here a little over a week ago and seems you can almost see stuff getting bigger.

This is wierd, here in the rain forest (165" a year average) it has not rained in over a week, I actually had to water stuff yesterday!

Wow figs!!!!!!! Yummers.

Nan

Hi Nan,

So you're experiencing some dry weather in the rain forest! I guess we are just being blessed with the water for now. I am wondering what type crop veggies you are growing, or are you speaking of house plants? And are bugs a big problem in the rain forest?

Cathy

no veggies for me at this time. People here grow cukes, summer squash, peas and a few other things. a lot of people have green houses and grow tomatoes and peppers. I think some grow potatoes and lettuce.

I just have flowers, mostly peranniels, poppys, foxglove and a few others. Plant nasturtiums and buy enough panseys for one planter. Not too many bugs here, a few aphids. But we have trophy sized slugs!!! That is pretty much how I planned what to plant a few years back--came home after a job and took note of what not been gobbled up!

I live on a steep hillside, so just have one long bed and lots of containers.

Nan

Hi again,

I find it interesting that folks would use green houses in the rain forest! Have you ever used nasturtiums in any of your recipes? I have read recipes that incorporate flowers most notably nasturtiums into certain dishes. In the Moroccan ccokbook I am reading they even have some recipes that call for a few rose patals sprinkeled onto a dish for flavor.
I have roses in bloom right now but they do not smell very sweet so I don't think I would use them, but if they were fragrant I would go for it!

Enjoy your time home Nan! I think one day I would like to see a rain forest, it will more than likely be the one in Puerto Rico.

Cathy

it is too wet and chilly for a lot of things most years, so in the green house, they can keep their feet dry and be warmer. Mostly tomatoes, peppers and some flowers. Also some herbs including basil. BTW I think basil is the slugs favorite herb. Had a pot full sitting up on a table and two mowed it down in like a half hour!!

I have used nasturtiums before in salad and as garnish, sort of peppery. I have also seen mid eastern recipes calling for rose water?

Nan

Yes Nan I have just recently purchased rose water, and there is a orange flower water also used in Moroccan cooking as well. I have a recipe that I want to try using the rose water it is:

Watermelon Salad with Rose Water and Lemon Balm

3 1/2 lbs. watermelon cubed & de-seeded
2 tsp sugar
3-4 tbsp rose water
a small bunch of fresh lemon balm

Place watermelon cubes in bowl, mix sugar & rose water until sugar is dissolved pour over watermelon, toss, cover & refergerate 1 hr or longer.
Toss the watermelon one more time before serving, scatter the lemon balm leaves over the top and serve.

I have smelled and tasted the rose water it smells very much like sweet roses! It has a distinct rose flavor, very different and I just know I have had it somewhere at sometime & just can't pin it down. Maybe at a restaurant called The New Jerusalem Cafe.

Funny you should mention basil and the slugs, I am experiencing a problem with squirrels digging thru mine at night the darned little "dickens", I keep threatening to let my dog sleep near the basil and protect it at night, he's a mini-pinscher and a house dog and sleeps with my grandaughter at night, I am afraid he will think it strange if we leave him out all night. But I love fresh basil and hey it's about time he do something to contribute to his upkeep:D Plus the squirrels are ravishing the young pears on our pear tree, what's one to do:confused:

Ugh..it rained like crazy here today..all day.
With my curly hair and a rainy day its good to be married to a blindman lol.
Every day is a good hair day.
