Hi Jakester,

When you make anything with sugar in it, what type sugar do you use to replace the cane sugar? I recommend trying the Beet Root Sugar, and he may be able to tolerate it.

One of the crazy allergies my 9 yr old has is to soy! I eliminate all soy from her diet happily:D I will allow her to eat some of the others in small quantities, only I have antihistimines handy (almost on a daily basis) to help control her allergic reactions. She does not get the allergy injections.

I'm not a very big fan of soy products either. I don't mind the sauce but am not a fan of the milk, bean curd or tofu. I feel so sorry for people that have to resort to the use of it. Specially soy milk.

I always laugh when I think of the TV show, Everybody Loves Raymond, and they did an episode where the mother made a Tofu Turkey. Tofurkey. She set it on the Holiday table and it was jiggling. They were all poking it and it was like jello. She had used a beet juice to give it a roasted turkey color. The way everyone had reacted to it was priceless.

For those that have to eat stuff like that, my heart goes out to them.

Hiya,

Yes Cody can tolerate beet sugar so that helps, but any pre-brought products normally contain cane, so we make everything from scratch.
We normally use rice milk, but it is very thin, so sometimes it doesn't work well in baking!
Unfortunately both of my boys, are allergic to medicines that are in syrups, so we only use the anti-histimines as a last resort as the can react to that also! SO the only option that we have is to eliminate the offending foods from their diets.
An example of the cost of hypo-allergenic foods in this country is: a loaf of bread, that is wheat, yeast, sugar and potato free would cost approx £6 = $8 a loaf, and it is totally rubbish. I try to make my own but sometimes that isn't always possible.

We have recently started to rear our own pigs at my mum's farm so that we can have totally organic free range pork, that we can make our own gluten free sausages etc... they are the best sausages ever! and all our food waste goes to the pigs, so we are definately recycling!

I have tried to look for some of the alternative flours today when out shopping, but had no luck so may have to investigate further before being able to make the lovely pastry recipe.

Have a good weekend all.

Jakester.

Jakester try a health food store. That is where you normally find them but you may have to order the flours. That's the way I started.

You knew it was going to happen. Someone had to say it. I like tofu. Sorry but I do. Not wild about soy milk but I had curried vegetables with tofu for lunch today and it was really delicious. I also make a chocolate pie using silken tofu instead of dairy to make the filling. It's amazingly delicious. Truely one of the best pies you could ever get so dark and chocolaty. No one believes there is tofu in there.
