I may be wromg but I thought that plenty of dust samples were already retrieved from the moon alond with a lot of rocks. It's not as if no one has been there before. I wonder what idiot decide one day. "Hey, lets shoot a missle at the moon". They will probably end up doing something stupid like splitting it in half. Then in 2012 it can fall on us.

LCROSS will be crashed into crater Cabeus A for the specific purpose of looking for traces of water ice in a permanantly shaded part of the crater. This isn't a frivolous exercise by any means. The long range goal is to find out if the resources exist on the moon to help support a permanant installation on the moon. The resulting dust cloud from the impact will be viewed and recorded in many bands and analyzed to discover the composition.
