I admire astronomy as a serious, legitimate science- love it, find it intensely interesting. But like other things- why has there always been a whacky "Art Bell"/alien abduction component to it?
Griz, some people just can't comprehend basic physics and prefer to take the easy road, thus you get religious fundamentalists and UFO whackos. In his book Bad Astronomy Phil Plait mentions an incident while he was at the Cape for a launch where he saw lights in the sky moving in a strange manner and with an odd noise. They turned out to be a flock of ducks illuminated by the spotlights and flying towards him. He says under it all he was a bit disappointed it wasn't a UFO. Underneath most of us have a wish to see the unusual and really want proof we're not alone in the universe.

All my life as a child I never believed we were alone in our Universe. I have always believed in One God and His Angels. I have always believed there were angels that fell from grace and that begat Satan and his legions! Now I still believe that and always will. I do believe the search for alien life forms remain and I even have no problems with researching that as well, for in the scheme of all things pertaining to life if it does not hurt then we can go ahead and study and research and ask questions all we want. That is how we are made and created, we are thinking creatures!
What I have a problem with is this whole Bombing aspect, why is it necessary? My own conclusion is that they are really wanting to study a new bomb and the first place that they would like to start with is on some object in outer space. Why can't they take dust from the moon that was retrieved when our space craft landed there years back? What has really changed since then? Not that much I am afraid. Well the moon got a little older and so did I! But my instinct tells me that this bombing stuff runs a whole heck of alot deeper than what any of us are being told! When they tested the first neuculear bombs look at a mess that created here on earth! At least they are smart enough not to try that one again. And since NASA is well aware that there are many agencies, astronomers and the like watching what is going on out there they simply must "announce" that they are going to bomb the moon. I do not for one moment believe their "explanation" of why!
Just my own educated guess and in-put.
P.S. Since this is a food forum, I sure wish they were researching more for the purposes of agriculture and feeding all of creation rather than destruction!!!

Yes, this is a food forum and the world organizations, especially the United States, has been heavily involved in finding ways for farmers to improve their output, quality, and protection from pests, etc., so the bulging population of the world, especially in developing countries, can feed themselves.........and then the people complain about people messing around with their 'natural' food.
Apparently that won't be much of an issue much longer since it appears that Mother Nature has decided to make farming and gardening in most of the world a total disaster. Even in California we have farmers not able to grow crops because they have no water.

No, LCROSS is not a bomb per se. It is a mapping and survey device which has completed its mission. They even got pics of Apollo landing sights which show the equipment left behind and even the trails left by the astronauts walking in the dust. Bombing here is used in the vernacular sense rather than literal. It will hit much like a small meteor and send up a plume which can be analyzed. The purpose is to find out if there is water ice under the dust layers and surface regolith.
Thank you for explaining that, it makes much better sence to me now.
