Picnic Squares Ingredients

• 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
• 1 cup hot water
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 2/3 cup shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 eggs, unbeaten
• 1 3/4 cup flour
• 1 tbsp cocoa powder
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 cup chocolate bits
• 1/2 cup walnuts

1. Combine chopped dates, hot water, and soda in small bowl; set aside.
2. Blend shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat until fluffy.
3. Add date mixture alternately with dry ingredients.
4. Stir in vanilla, 1/2 cup chocolate bits, and 1/4 cup walnuts.
5. Pour into a greased 9x13x2" pan.
6. Sprinkle remaining chocolate bits and walnuts on top of batter.
7. Place in oven and bake at 350° F for 45 minutes.
