1/2 cup combination of soft shortening and butter 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1 egg 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 3/4 cup unsifted Pillsbury Unbleached or King Arthur Unbleached Flour* Preheat oven to 400 degrees 1. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla thoroughly. 2. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. 3. Combine with sugar mixture, mix thoroughly. 4. Form into roll 2 1/2 inches in diameter. 5. Wrap in wax paper. Chill until firm. 6. Cut roll into 1/8 inch slices. 7. Place slices a little apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 8. Sprinkle with decorative sprinkles. 9. Bake 8 - 10 mins or until lightly browned. 10. Cool on wire racks. Servings: Approx 5 dozen cookies * Use unbleached flour for best flavor. Unbleached flour is bright white, it's just more time consuming to make. Flour will whiten naturally after milling. Since the natural whitening takes time (about 6 months), many producers speed up the process using chemicals. That process and chemical addition can alter the taste of foods made from bleached flour.
