3 lbs beef brisket or chuck
8 cups cold water
3 cabbage leaves, chopped fine
1 can tomato paste
1 cup chopped celery
1 large marrow bone
5 carrots, diced fine
1 medium onion, chopped
1/8 tsp pepper
1/2 cup pearl barley
3 tsps dried parsley flakes
salt to taste
French bread

Cut up beef to bite size pieces.
Simmer all ingredients 4 to 5 hrs.
Place thick slice of hot buttered French bread in bowl and pour soup over it.
If desired, bread may be sprinkled with grated cheese before adding soup.
