  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
  3. Mix brown sugar and flour; add salt and baking soda.
  4. Cut in butter as for pie crust.
  5. Reserve 1 cup of mixture.
  6. Add egg, milk and vanilla to the remaining mixture.
  7. Beat until blended.
  8. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
  9. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs, nuts, and toffee.
  10. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
  11. Cool and cut into bars.
