  1. Preheat oven to 350° f.
  2. Pour hot water over the chopped dates. Set aside.
  3. Cream together the butter and sugar.
  4. Add vanilla and egg to butter and sugar mix, and mix well.
  5. Dissolve the baking soda in 1/4 cup water and add to sugar mixture.
  6. Add dates to sugar mixture, and stir in.
  7. Mix in the flour a little at a time.
  8. Pour into a greased loaf pan, and bake for 1 hour.
