Sprinkle baking soda over chopped dates. Add boiling water and set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs, flour, ground cinnamon, and sea salt.
Combine with date mixture and add vanilla extract.
Grease and flour a 9x13" pan.
Sprinkle batter with 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 3/4 cup chocolate chips, and 1/4 cup sugar.
Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350° F.
