Rye Bread Ingredients

To make Rye Bread

  1. Combine the yeast, sugar and lukewarm (85° F) water in a cup, and let sit for 10 - 15 minutes to activate the yeast.
  2. Mix the molasses, shortening, salt, boiling water in a large mixing bowl, let cool to lukewarm, then add the yeast mixture.
  3. Add 2 cups rye flour, 3 cups white flour to the mixing bowl and beat well.
  4. Add 3 1/2 cups white flour and knead well.
  5. Place the Rye Bread in a large greased bowl, and cover with a cloth.
  6. Let the Rye Bread dough rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour.
  7. Shape the Rye Bread dough into 3 loaves and place each loaf in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Place in a warm location, cover the loaf pans with a damp cloth and let rise until double in bulk.
  9. Bake Rye Bread at 325° F. for 1 hour.
  10. Remove Rye Bread from oven, and immediately remove the loaves from pans and let cool on wire racks before cutting.
  11. If desired, brush tops of hot Rye Bread with melted butter.
