  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Melt butter in heavy 9 to 10" skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and cook, uncovered, for 3 minutes.
  4. Add mushrooms and barley; cook, uncovered, for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add salt, pepper and broth; bring to a boil.
  6. Pour mixture into an ungreased 1 1/2 quart casserole and bake, covered, for 35 minutes.
  7. Stir before serving.
