Rye Bread Ingredients

To make Rye Bread

  1. Mix rye flour, shortening, molasses, salt, sugar.
  2. Heat potato water to hot but not boiling and pour over mixture. Mix well and alllow to cool to lukewarm. Add yeast.
  3. Add white flour a little at a time andkeep mixing and adding more flour until the dough is firm.
  4. Place Rye Bread Dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in size (about an hour).
  5. Cut the Rye Bread dough into 2 equal sized loaves, and place each half in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan. Cover the loaf pans with a damp cloth, and let the Rye Bread dough rise until doubled.
  6. Place the loaf pans in a preheated 350° F oven, and bake for 1 hour.
  7. Remove Rye Bread from loaf pans, and allow to cool on wire racks before slicing.

*Potato water is the left over water from boiling potatoes.
