McCormick Juniper Berries 11oz 311g - FAQ
- Q: What are juniper berries?
- A: Juniper berries are the small, round fruits of the juniper shrub, Juniperus communis. They ripen slowly, turning from green to deep blue or purple over two to three years.
- Q: What do juniper berries taste like?
- A: They have a sharp, piney flavor with a slightly sweet and resinous aroma. Juniper is best known as the flavoring that gives gin its distinctive taste.
- Q: Can juniper berries be planted or sprout if composted?
- A: No. McCormick Juniper Berries (as well as all McCormick products) are processed for food use and are infertile. They cannot sprout or reproduce if planted in soil, including in compost.
- Q: Where do the best juniper berries come from?
- A: The finest berries for cooking are harvested in Macedonia and Albania. Wild juniper in North America tends to be less flavorful and not ideal for seasoning.
- Q: How should juniper berries be stored?
- A: Store them in an airtight container away from heat and light. Buy only small amounts, since they lose flavor after long storage even when kept whole.
- Q: How are juniper berries used in cooking?
- A: They are often paired with wild game, beef, or pork. Juniper also adds a pleasant herbal note to sauerkraut, marinades, and sauces made with garlic, black pepper, thyme, or rosemary.
- Q: How many juniper berries should I use?
- A: Only a few are needed -- usually three or four crushed berries will season an entire dish. Their flavor is strong, so a little goes a long way.
- Q: Should juniper berries be crushed before using?
- A: Yes. Crush the berries just before cooking to release their essential oils. Once broken, the flavor fades quickly, so it's best to crush only what you need at the moment.
