McCormick Ground Cloves are the flower buds of a tree grown in the Indian Ocean Region. Cloves were introduced to the Europeans by Marco Polo. Often associated with studding hams, cloves are also used in many other recipes including the distinct flavor of pickled beets.
Cloves have a flavor that is strong, pungent, and sweet, almost hot. Their flavor is one of the most penetrating of all spices and their bitter, astringent flavor leaves a numbing sensation in the mouth. Cloves are the dried, unopened, nail-shaped flower buds of the evergreen Syzygium aromaticum. Whole Cloves are popular for flavoring ham, pork, pickled fruits, gravies, and syrups. Ground Cloves are used in cakes, gingerbread, cookies, fruit salad, chili sauce, beef stew, pot roasts, sweet potatoes and green vegetables. Cloves are an important ingredient in Caribbean, Chinese, Indian, Latin American and Scandinavian cooking.
While often associated with studding hams, cloves are also used in many other recipes including the distinct flavor of pickled beets.
